What is the National Amateur Photography Contest? A contest whose high quality and popularity has resulted in a contest which has been run for a continuous 48 years. Since it was established in 1970, it has naturally undergone many changes. The first years the contest took turns with the Slovak AMFO contest, taking place every two years. What hasn’t changed, however, is the interest of photographers in the contest, the fact that many top amateur photographers have been highlighted by the contest (M Borovička, F Dostál, J Anděl, L Dušková, J Platenka and many others), just as at its beginning future professional photographers such as D Kyndrová, L Kamarád, P Moško and V Birgus took part. Thus the contest’s asset isn’t just in coming together and discovering work, but above all in its educative effect, and increasing the awareness of the photography culture.

The 38th annual National Amateur Photography Contest, on behalf of and with financial support from the Ministry of Culture, is run by Nipos-Artama and the Association of Czech Photographers, along with the town of Svitavy’s Cultural Services Centre with the co-operation of the Town Museum and Gallery in Svitavy, the Impuls Hradec Králové amateur culture centre, and the Friends of Photography Society. It reached a climax in Svitavy on Saturday 12 May 2018, when the winners were announced and the first exhibition of the largest amateur photography contest in the Czech Republic was launched – the 38th National Amateur Photography Contest 2018.

The event is held with support from Czech Minister of Culture, PhDr. Ilja Šmíd.
